Synagro’s South Kern Compost Manufacturing Facility receives Gold-Level Recognition for environmentally conscious operations and practices in California. National Biosolids Partnership recognizes stewardship and transparency.
Synagro Technologies, Inc. today announced that one of its compost facilities in California has received Gold-Level Recognition for its Biosolids Management Program (BMP) from the National Biosolids Partnership (NBP).
The recognition indicates the South Kern Composting Manufacturing Facility’s continuous improvement in the areas of environmental performance, regulatory compliance, quality management practices, and ongoing interaction with its stakeholders.
The Biosolids Management Program measures how well companies participate and comply with internationally recognized standards for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). To receive and maintain Gold-Level Recognition, a company must have third party audits conducted on its systems and operations every five years, as well as conduct its own internal audits annually. The results of both audits are sent to the National Biosolids Partnership, where recommendations are made based on the Company’s practices.
“Synagro takes its position as an industry leader seriously and that’s why we are continually striving to not only maintain, but improve, all aspects of our operations,” said Eric Zimmer, president and CEO of Synagro. “The Gold-Level Recognition validates our ongoing commitment to providing our customers, as well as the communities in which we operate, environmentally sound operations and solutions that they can trust.”
Synagro’s South Kern Compost Manufacturing Facility is one of the largest commercial compost facilities utilizing air emission control devices in the United States. The 44-acre facility is a California-qualified recycling facility which receives and processes recycled materials (biosolids, green and wood waste) from municipalities in the production of high-quality compost which is used in the agricultural market by farmers.
The South Kern Facility’s Biosolids Management Program has previously been recognized by the NBP at the Silver Level and Bronze Level in 2012.
The NBP is an alliance of the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA) and the Water Environment Federation (WEF) with advisory support from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
