Since it opened in 2005, Lourdes Specialty Hospital in Willingboro has been a quiet leader in South Jersey health care. Now, South Jersey’s only long-term acute-care hospital is being recognized as a top medical facility and outstanding employer.

Lourdes Specialty Hospital was named “Best Hospital in New Jersey” and New Jersey’s “Best Employer Overall” in the “Jobs Now! Best Places to Work 2013” reader poll, sponsored by the Bucks County Courier Times, Intelligencer and Burlington County Times. The poll asked workers to nominate employers in 20 categories, and Lourdes Specialty Hospital came out on top in two major areas.

Several employees noted some of the highlights of working at Lourdes Specialty Hospital.

Colleen Pace, a clinical liaison for Lourdes Specialty Hospital who evaluates patients, has worked in long-term acute care for more than 25 years. She noted that every employee is valued for his or her role in patient care. “There’s something magical here,” she said “It’s a different culture here. It starts with the CEO on down. Everyone plays an important role. Everyone is very valued here.”

Common themes among employees are teamwork and opportunities for growth.“Team spirit,” said Kimberly Fetterolf, director of clinical services at Lourdes Specialty Hospital. “It’s a very friendly, family environment.”

Nurse Debbie Cunningham came to Lourdes Specialty Hospital three years ago and was pleasantly surprised by the level of expertise and experience at the facility. She was also impressed by the hospital’s career opportunities. “I’m looking for growth and to continue to grow,” she said. “I plan to be here a while.”

“Everyone here pulls together,” said Karen Hobson, a quality resource manager with more than 50 years nursing experience, who added that she “loves what she does.” She finds long-term acute care a particularly rewarding endeavor.

Said Joseph Raphael, a telemetry technician at Lourdes Specialty Hospital: “If you want to learn here, you will. If you want to grow, you will. If you want a career, you will go far. There is lots of opportunity.”

Lourdes Specialty Hospital of Southern New Jersey (LSH) is a 69-bed Long Term Acute Care (LTAC) Hospital, providing acute care to critically ill and medically complex patients. The hospital provides specialized acute care to patients who require an extended hospital stay averaging greater than 25 days. LSH occupies an 8 million dollar, newly renovated hospital on the campus of Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County. Lourdes Medical Center is a 249-bed facility, which is part of Lourdes Health System. Lourdes Specialty Hospital's interdisciplinary healthcare team and a medical staff of approximately 300 physicians serve the regional communities and meet the unique needs of each patient. LSH primarily serves the Delaware Valley region, including Mercer, Salem, Gloucester, Burlington, and Camden Counties, as well as Philadelphia and Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
