The co-owners of Portland Aquarium recently announced that all foster children would be allowed into the aquarium at no cost. We wanted to provide a way for families to have a relaxing experience that may help them bond better. Countless studies show that aquariums have a calming effect and can cut down on stress levels.

It was a regular week at Portland Aquarium when the co-owners made an announcement. They declared that all foster children would be given complimentary admission to Portland Aquarium, a popular family field trip destination. It turned out that the Covino family had fostered many children, and Ammon Covino thought that complimentary admission would be a nice way to help other foster parents and the children they care for.

Vince Covino had done research on the calming affect of aquariums, and as an experienced foster parent, he knows that many foster children come from very stressful situations. “We wanted to provide a way for families to have a relaxing experience that may help them bond better. Countless studies show that aquariums have a calming effect and can cut down on stress levels,” said the Covino brothers. Judging from the numerous foster families who thanked Portland Aquarium on its Facebook page after their recent visits, it seems that at the very least, Portland Aquarium is providing a fun day out for entire families.

After it was announced that all foster children were welcome to attend at no cost, many requests poured into the Portland Aquarium Facebook page to include the military. The aquarium’s co-owners responded with this message: “The brave men and women that have served our country will be allowed entry into the Portland Aquarium on us as a token our appreciation for their courageous service.” One of the Portland Aquarium Facebook page’s military posts was shared over 500 times in under 50 minutes and military personnel came in droves to take advantage of the gift from the aquarium. Military veterans and active military members were allowed free entry into Portland Aquarium during Memorial Day and the rest of the following week.

Countless Portland Aquarium guests say the exhibits give off a sense of calmness and peace, and that they enjoy simply watching the fish swim in the illuminated tanks. Portland Aquarium’s Facebook page has received close to 36,000 “likes” since its inception, proving that Portland Aquarium is becoming one of Portland’s most popular family attractions. The Aquarium has even earned its own Wiki page. The Portland Aquarium Wiki says the aquarium features 30 exhibits displaying more than 2,500 species.
