D. Miller & Associates, PLLC is now accepting inquiries from women who were diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes after taking the cholesterol-lowering drug, Lipitor. A multidistrict litigation has been approved in South Carolina for consolidation of these cases [In Re Lipitor Litigation, MDL No. 2459 (JPML)].

D. Miller & Associates, PLLC is ready to assist those harmed by this drug in getting the relief they deserve.

The law firm of D. Miller & Associates reports that the first lawsuits against Lipitor manufacturer Pfizer, Inc. have been filed in the United States, and a multidistrict litigation has been approved for these Lipitor lawsuit cases by the Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML).

"Many men and women in the United States have been prescribed Lipitor to combat high cholesterol," notes the firm's lead attorney Darren Miller. "But women have incurred a great unknown risk by taking the drug: the development of Type 2 Diabetes."

A study completed in conjunction with the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI) in 2012, found a link between the statin class of cholesterol-lowering medications, like Lipitor, and the development of Type 2 Diabetes in women—specifically post-menopausal women. (Culver AL, Ockene IS, Balasubramanian R, et al. "Statin Use and Risk of Diabetes Mellitus in Postmenopausal Women in the Women's Health Initiative." Archives of Internal Medicine, 2012,172(2): pp.144-152.).

Miller points out that statin drugs are often prescribed to lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or “bad” cholesterol levels. Lipitor is one of the top sellers in the cholesterol drug market, bringing in almost $4 billion in revenues for Pfizer, Inc. in 2012, according to the company’s annual report (pfizer.com/files/annualreport/2012/financial/financial2012.pdf).

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration became aware of a potential problem with Lipitor and in February of 2012 required labeling changes for the product, to include “important new safety information,” including the increased risk of developing Type 2 Diabetes in women after taking the drug (fda.gov/ForConsumers/ConsumerUpdates/ucm293330.htm).

"Although the FDA’s warning was helpful, it might have been too little too late for many female consumers," says Lipitor attorney Miller. "Diabetes is a lifelong disease that can result in many further complications and required lifestyle changes, including strict diet restrictions, daily blood testing and prescription medications. It is not a disease that should be taken lightly, and these consumers deserve compensation for a risk they were not made aware of by the drug manufacturer."

Those potentially eligible for compensation are post-menopausal women who have developed Type 2 diabetes after taking Lipitor, he adds. "D. Miller & Associates, PLLC is ready to assist those harmed by this drug in getting the relief they rightly deserve."
