With these applications, which provide a three-dimensional model of the targeted area, healthcare professionals can assist colleagues and patients in understanding the medical condition present and the proposed way in which to address it. Using animation, these apps demonstrate surgical and other procedures.

"Patient understanding and education of disease processes, diagnoses for which they are undergoing treatment and, especially, surgical procedures that are being recommended for treatment are key elements to appropriate decision making, patient satisfaction and successful outcomes," asserts Dr. Anthony Schepsis. "There is an increasing number of websites available for patient education; however, sometimes finding the appropriate information, especially visual aids and videos, can sometimes be difficult. There is now an increasing number of applications available not only for iPads and computers but for smartphones as well. These technological resources can contribute to a detailed patient understanding of surgical procedures, which is best accomplished through visual aids. Basically, apps can be used to help patients to understand exactly what to expect during their treatment and rehabilitation process. Ultimately, this knowledge can directly impact the outcomes that patients experience."
