Howell photographer debuts collection of breast cancer survivor stories at city’s annual Pink Party on June 13, 2013.

PINKportraits, a new book by Howell area photographer and author Karen Luce, will debut at Howell’s annual Pink Party, an event held each year to raise awareness of breast cancer. The 94-page, full color book features 13 breast cancer warriors and survivors ranging in age from 40 to 76 and portrays their fight against the disease in stories and photos. Ninety percent of the proceeds from the sale of the book benefit breast cancer research and supportive care.

Planning is underway for the city’s fifth annual Pink Party, scheduled for June 13. This community-wide, ticketed fundraiser for breast cancer awareness and supportive care has raised more than $175,000 since its inception. This year the Pink Party boasts a new feature: a book featuring 13 breast cancer warriors and survivors. The book is the creation of local photographer and writer, Karen Westmoreland Luce of Karen Luce Creative, LLC. Luce has volunteered to photograph the event for the last several years.

“I absolutely love this event,” says Luce. “The idea of the community coming together to help support women and men with breast cancer — it truly does take a village. The night goes by so fast that I wanted to do something that would commemorate the event for years to come and celebrate the brave men and women who fight this disease every day,” adds Luce.

Over the last year, Luce interviewed and photographed local women to write PINKportraits, A Tribute to The Women and Men of Howell’s Pink Party. The book includes women of various ages, with different types and at different stages of breast cancer. There are women who have been in remission for years along with women have just finished their treatment.

“For each of their photo sessions, I asked the women what makes them feel beautiful and we designed their individual photoshoots from there. Most women either don’t have, or wouldn’t take the opportunity to get their picture taken. I wanted to give them a chance to feel like they gorgeous women they are.”

Luce says that she didn’t anticipate the personal journey on which writing the book would take her. “It was an amazing journey and I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished together. The real credit goes to the survivors — I set out to create a testament to their strength and courage. I hope that I make them proud.”

The 94-page full color book is available now online and at select stores. For more information, please contact Karen at karenlucecreative(at)gmail(dot)com or phone 810-923-4745.
