A recent report into petrol thefts has revealed that more than 2,300 drivers were recorded fleeing Manchester petrol stations without paying over the last three years – reports news website Mancunian Matters in 'Plague of 'drive-offs' exposed: More than 2,300 drivers flee Manchester petrol stations without paying' on June 4.

The news site reports that since April 2010, more than 3,000 crimes have been recorded in petrol station forecourts by Greater Manchester Police. 76% of the crimes fell into the category of driving off without paying for petrol – making up a vast majority of crimes in petrol stations.

The BP spokesman told Mancunian Matters: “We work closely with the police to identify offenders through the use of sophisticated CCTV cameras and Automatic Number Plate Recognition systems.”

A spokesperson from AlertSystems said:

“Petrol theft is a substantial problem for many petrol stations, but the introduction of HD CCTV and ANPR cameras is enabling fuel retailers to combat the problem. The use of ANPR cameras acts firstly as a deterrent as would be thieves know their number plate is being recorded and stored on a database. Secondly in the event of a theft number plate details are quickly passed onto the police. Many retailers are also using HD cameras to provide evidential quality images linking specific individuals to the vehicles involved in the crime.”
