Connecticut Based Startup, iQCoPay, Launches a New Platform to Pay Doctors Online

Starting today, patients at medical practices in Connecticut have a better resource in paying their bills. iQCoPay is a new tool for paying medical bills online, with monthly payment options to make large bills more affordable for patients with deductibles. Shoreline Orthopedics and Sports Medicine will begin offering the service to its patients on June 7th, with other area doctors following suit.

“We are passionate about affordability of health care because it has affected each of us personally at some level,” says Blake Walker, Founder and Product Manager. “We’ve seen an opportunity to remedy some of the inefficiencies that exist for both patients and doctors. Our mission is to make paying for healthcare more convenient and budget friendly, and I think we’ve accomplished that.”

With iQCoPay, patients have access to their bills online, sent directly to them by their provider. They can choose from several payment options, using a debit card, health savings account or credit card. Patients then have the option to pay in full at no cost or pay over time for larger bills with a $2.99 service charge.

“Medical bills can have a serious impact on consumers’ financial lives, and we want to be a part of the solution to this growing issue here in Connecticut.” - Chris Walker, CEO

The need for a patient-centered health care payment model has never been greater. As new parts of the Affordable Care Act come into effect, services like iQCoPay are critical for patients who struggle with high deductibles. According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, the number of workers in plans with a deductible of at least $2,000 has increased to 14%, from just 7% in 2009. While just over a third have deductibles over $1,000.

“Our roots are in Connecticut. We felt there was no better place to launch this product than right from home,” said Chris Walker, CEO. “Medical bills can have a serious impact on consumers’ financial lives, and we want to be a part of the solution to this growing issue here in Connecticut.”

iQCoPay’s Connecticut launch is the beginning of a strategy to make paying doctors easier nationwide. Plans for a expansion into New York City and Boston are in the works for late 2013, with other major markets planned for early 2014.
