Rival battle between NY Lizards and Chesapeake Bayhawks fueled by Lizards’ newcomer Rob Pannell, all-time NCAA Division I scoring leader and 2013 Tewaaraton Award recipient.

History will be made Thursday night June 6 when Major League Lacrosse and New York’s own Lizards take a bite out of the Big Apple with the inaugural game held at the Icahn Stadium, located at 20 Randall’s Island Park, New York, NY 10035, this Thursday, June 06 07:00 PM EST.

The long anticipated debut of New York’s Major League Lacrosse team to Randall’s Island pits the two most noted team rivals of the league against each other beginning at 7:00 PM sharp.

This season however, the Lizards are adding what they believe to be their new advantage, the talent and athleticism of newly recruited Rob Pannell, all-time NCAA Division I scoring leader (354 career points at Cornell), and the most recent recipient of the Tewaaraton Award.

A native of Smithtown, L.I., Pannell made his Major League debut for the Lizards last Friday night against the Charlotte Hounds. Pannell scored three goals and had an assist, but the final score was 14-12 in favor of the Hounds.

Considered the LeBron James of lacrosse, Pannell played at Smithtown West High School and Deerfield Academy and was named to the high school All-American lacrosse team. Following his successful college career at Cornell, Pannell was first overall draft pick in the 2012 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft.

“We are excited to have the Ivy League’s first-ever three-time Player of the Year on our team,” said Jeff Rudnick, CEO of the New York Lizards. “He is a big part of our plan to see this team grow and prosper in 2013 and beyond.”

Based on the fan’s electric reactions last Friday night, there is little doubt Pannell and his teammates have what it takes to do just that. In addition to Pannell, the Lizards feature Long Island native and perennial all-star Max Seibald, as well as face-off specialist Greg “Beast” Gurenlian and 2011 & 12 Goalie of the Year Drew Adams. Recent trades have added David Earl and Steve Waldeck from the Hamilton Nationals and Mark Matthews from the Denver Outlaws.

“We have repositioned the team as the New York Lizards and expect a great season, thanks in large part to players like Pannell,” said Andrew Murstein, president of Medallion Financial Corp. who leads the team’s ownership group which also includes Richard Mack, North American CEO of AREA Property Partners.

Adding to the excitement for this Thursday’s battle of the titans will be mentoring presence of “First Down” Jim Brown, 78, legendary college and pro football great and All-American lacrosse star, now a Lizards co-owner. Brown will be amongst the many pulling for the New York Lizards when they go against Chesapeake starting at 7:00 p.m.
