Boise meets Venice Beach with the June 6th opening of a new outdoor gym in Ann Morrison Park.

A gift from Bodybuilding.com, Boise’s first outdoor gym features 15 pieces of equipment, including a sit-up bench, leg press, rowing machine, and squat press. The gym is located along the Greenbelt west of the volleyball court in Ann Morrison Park.

Mayor David H. Bieter will join Bodybuilding.com founder and CEO Ryan DeLuca and Doug Holloway, director of Boise Parks & Recreation, for a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon June 6.

Later that day, Bodybuilding.com athletes will demonstrate the equipment and provide free instruction to the general public at 12:30 and 5:30 p.m. Local yoga instructors will lead a cool-down stretch at the end of each class.

“We live in an extremely active community,” said Bodybuilding.com founder and CEO Ryan DeLuca. “And we wanted to build on that spirit by giving everyone a chance to experience the life-changing physical and mental benefits of a gym – for free.”

“The outdoor gym provides a healthy, accessible recreational experience for our citizens,” said Doug Holloway, director of Boise Parks & Recreation. “We are so grateful to Bodybuilding.com for this contribution, which is consistent with the goal of our comprehensive plan to enhance fitness in neighborhoods throughout our community.”

The project aligns with the City of Boise’s strategic vision of fostering an environment where learning, the arts, culture and recreation thrive.

Research shows that exercise and spending time outdoors provides multiple health benefits. According to a recent study published in Environmental Science and Technology, exercising outdoors improves overall mood and self-esteem.

The equipment grouped together on a 1,400-square-foot pad adjacent to the Greenbelt. Signs provide instructions and health tips.

The donation is valued at $80,000, which includes the equipment, installation and maintenance for five years.

The outdoor gym dedication coincides with Idaho Health and Yoga Awareness Week, a five-day celebration proclaimed by Governor Otter.
