Cautious couples insure biggest (and likely most expensive) day of their lives

With the high cost of weddings today, more brides and grooms are adding one more item to their wedding planning to-do list: purchase wedding insurance. While this may seem like an unnecessary hit to the budget, wedding insurance provides a sense of security to couples preparing for one of the most important days of their lives.

Even the most meticulously planned wedding can experience mishaps, as was the case for one bride whose photographer had a faulty memory card in the camera used to shoot her wedding. She ended up with only 98 photos, and none included her wedding party. Because the bride had purchased wedding insurance, she and her husband were covered for up to $2,000 in order to recreate her wedding photos. Depending on the policy, wedding insurance can cover everything from stolen gifts, property damage and injuries to the bride, groom or guests. Some even cover postponing the wedding due to the bride or groom being called to active duty, not to mention issues with vendors or problems with Mother Nature.

Whatever the case may be, with the average wedding costing upwards of $25,000, buying wedding insurance is considered by many to be money well spent.

“When you or your family is going to be spending large amounts of money on a wedding, it’s a good idea to protect those investments from the unforeseen,” said Brett Reynolds, CEO of Wedding.com. “And not only are the dollars spent being covered, but memories as well, in the event of wedding photos or a wedding video being lost or damaged. The added expense of the insurance will seem minimal if something unplanned occurs.”

For couples who are worried about fitting the cost of wedding insurance into their wedding planning budget, typical premiums range from as low as $100 to as much as $1,000, providing options that are suitable for most.

Although no amount of wedding insurance will be able to replace the bride and groom’s big day, it’s helpful to have peace of mind that in the event something unfortunate does happen, they’re covered.
