Wireless headsets greatly reduce the physical and mental stresses that accompany complex towing and heavy recovery operations.

Sonetics® Corporation, a leading global supplier of wireless communication products, has released a new team communication system designed specifically for towing and recovery professionals.

In the towing configuration, four or more wireless headsets can be connected within a local broadcast radius of up to 1600 feet. The headsets are equipped with open microphones, allowing crew members to communicate hands-free, just like a telephone call. The headsets also provide 26 decibels of hearing protection, which means users can talk to each other in normal voices, without shouting or using hand signals. Optionally, the local system can be connected to a two-way radio, allowing the entire crew to stay in touch with dispatch or other remote location.

“The Sonetics towing communication system is a huge improvement over two-way radios,” said Patrick Majewski, assistant manager of Ted’s Towing in Baltimore, MD. “It allows our crew leader to step back and see the big picture during lifts and moves. He can also issue the all-clear signal and instantly know whether everyone is out of the danger zone. That could easily save someone’s life.”

Majewski also noted that the headsets greatly reduce the physical and mental stresses that accompany heavy recoveries. Recently, Ted’s Towing was called upon to upright a tractor-trailer that had overturned across the median of Interstate 695 outside of Baltimore. It took a nine-person crew and two rotating cranes working all night to accomplish the task. “Those kinds of jobs are brutal,” Majewski said, alluding to the climbing, stooping, and shouting that are often necessary, “but the headsets eliminated that. They beat yelling and waving by a long shot.”

Sonetics designs and manufactures wireless communication products for a wide variety of challenging environments. Together with its Firecom and Flightcom divisions, Sonetics helps more than half a million customers in 90 countries solve their toughest communication problems.
