Ohio Valley Center for Periodontics & Implants Improves Dental Implant Success by Removing Gum Disease with New Laser Gum Surgery

Ohio periodontists, Dr. Silverstein and Dr. Parker now offer laser gum surgery as an alternative to more invasive forms of periodontal surgery. Patients who have lost teeth due to gum disease can now have a higher chance of success with dental implants than they would with traditional gum disease treatment.

Dr. Silverstein and Dr. Parker of the Ohio Valley Center for Periodontics & Implants can now remove gum disease with laser gum surgery, helping patients with missing teeth prepare their mouth for dental implants.

The Ohio periodontists offer the most recent FDA-cleared treatment, the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP). With the help of this procedure, patients who were not previously good candidates for dental implants due to gum disease may be able to enjoy the benefits of receiving implants.

LANAP uses a laser to remove bacteria and unhealthy gum tissue. Unlike traditional periodontal surgery, LANAP leaves healthy tissue and the tooth intact, minimizing discomfort and healing time for patients. This can help speed up the dental implant process. The laser stimulates the bone around the root of the tooth, which causes growth and improves a patient’s likelihood of keeping that tooth. Cosmetically, this laser gum surgery also presents a change from periodontal surgery that many people welcome: since healthy gum tissue isn’t removed, receding gums are not an outcome of the procedure.

With all the benefits this procedure offers, patients who have lost teeth and weren’t able to have implants due to gum disease may now have the option of receiving them. Implants are not recommended for patients who have severe bone loss or gum disease that is moderate to severe. LANAP helps conserve bone and gum tissue while removing the gum disease, leaving patients better qualified for implants.

Dental implants have been shown to offer many advantages over other tooth replacement options. Most notably, the implants stimulate the jawbone, which helps prevent bone loss and erosion. Other options, like dentures or bridges, don’t address this problem, and can require more frequent maintenance as the jawbone recedes and causes changes in the shape of the mouth. Additionally, implants don’t damage the surrounding teeth, so over time they prove to be a more economical and healthy option.
