The Circle of Care Burn Foundation (“COCBF”) (http://www.circleofcareburnfoundation.org), announces the recipients of the Second Annual A. Richard Grossman College Scholarship Fund: Karen Cruz and Jose Rivas. This award, which provides financial support for up to five years, is an opportunity for burn survivors to pursue their college careers with added security and confidence. The grant recipients hail from Southern California.
As a young girl, Karen suffered scalding third-degree burns on her hands, leaving her prone to additional injuries, infections and scars. Along with the physical pain, she endured taunts and ridicule from other children. Thankfully, through the encouragement of her family and support from a camp for burn survivors, Karen began to blossom and develop a love for student government, later serving as student body president for two consecutive years. With this passion for helping others, complemented by the support of fellow burn survivors, Karen now strives for success and seeks to serve the world.
Jose is an aspiring writer, with excellent academic skills, maturity, intelligence, and compassion to help people. He often speaks of the importance of his family, where he is resolute about being a good son and older sibling. As a seven-year-old boy, Jose became aware of his injuries (and scarred right hand), withstanding the isolation of his peers and various hardships. An immigrant to America, and despite encountering many injustices, Jose is now a dedicated student who has a hunger for knowledge and a quest to share joy and happiness with others.
The scholarship further complements a variety of programs from COCBF, including:
- Direct patient assistance
- Emergency assistance fund
- Burn survivor camp
- Continued education for medical professionals
- Burn prevention education for seniors and the disabled
- Burn survivor and family support groups
Linda David, CEO stated, “The A. Richard Grossman College Scholarship Fund is an excellent example of the philanthropy and leadership of one of our most esteemed supporters. Dr. Grossman’s contributions represent a career with an emphasis on empowering patients to recover and reach their goals with determination and good health. This award provides Karen and Jose with the chance to realize their dreams and pursue their studies. COCBF thanks Dr. A. Richard Grossman and Elizabeth Grossman for this generous scholarship and the causes he champions with his customary eloquence and inspiration.”
Dr. Richard Grossman, Founder of COCBF and the Grossman Burn Centers said: “COCBF offers an essential suite of services, which help burn survivors and their family members. This assistance is critical in the recovery process, which enables patients to have the peace of mind to heal and succeed. It is an honor to collaborate with this organization, for which this scholarship is a reflection of shared values and unity. I also salute all the applicants of this scholarship, starting with Karen and Jose, as they are a powerful symbol of heroism and optimism.”
