An NFL Father’s Day Story, "#10 DeSean Jackson: The Making of a Father’s Dream"

The sports documentary film about DeSean Jackson, wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles, debuts on iNDemand June 16th, 2013—a gritty Father’s Day tribute to Bill Jackson —a dad who was driven and unflinching. Produced by Byron Jackson and the Konwiser brothers.

DeSean turns to the camera and says, “Pops man, I love you. You knew.”

This warm, but heart-wrenching documentary made by DeSean's older brother and filmmaker, Byron Jackson, provides an intimate portrait of their father, Bill Jackson, and his drive to see his sons play in the NFL, and how that drive affected their family, in ways both good and bad.

“Our dad used to send us letters always ending in “Think NFL”, said Byron Jackson, filmmaker and Managing Partner of SportsRhythms LLC.

The film chronicles DeSean Jackson’s epic journey from Pop Warner football to star wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles. Byron began filming DeSean when he was about nine years old, and kept the camera rolling for more than 18 years. Watch the official film trailer.

Not a day went by when DeSean wasn’t being groomed for the NFL by his dad.

“I never gave him time off. People used to say,” is what Bill Jackson says in the film. Bill brought in four other former pro players and track stars in addition to Byron, to form what they called, "Team Jackson"—men that also came just shy of athletic excellence—Darrick Davis, Irving Booker, Gary Cablayan, and Travis Clark.

In one key scene in the film, DeSean and Byron are waiting nervously to get word on whether DeSean has been selected to the 2010 Pro Bowl. The call came from Coach Reid. The coach’s words sent young Jackson barreling down the steps and into his brother’s arms. That’s when DeSean Jackson made NFL history: he was the first player ever selected to the Pro Bowl at two different positions, both as a wide receiver and kick return specialist.

In the film, after the initial celebration, DeSean turns to the camera and says, “Pops man, I love you. You knew.”

Pops wasn’t there to see it. Sadly, the previous year, Bill had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He passed away on May 14, 2009.
