As per a report on May 29, 2013 on Facebook’s newsroom page, the social media giant seems to have taken a leaf of Twitter policy to make sure that popular pages of personalities and celebrities actually belong to the people whom they claim to represent.
While Twitter had long followed this policy which ensured the authenticity of its celebrity accounts, Facebook till recently had avoided such categorization. Now, the company has revealed that it too would bestow badges of authenticity to pages created and maintained by or on behalf of important personalities and groups.
According to Samuel Junghenn, the founder of Think Big Online – one of Australia’s most reputed digital marketing agencies; this is excellent news not just for the said personalities but also for the millions of users that follow them. “This is definitely a much awaited feature and one that should have been introduced long back. Fans deserve to know that the pages they are following are genuine or not.”
Samuel explains, “There are hundreds of pages on Facebook that claim to be managed by a certain celebrity and often Facebook the way it ranks its pages shows a disingenuous page ahead of the authentic one on its search results. Often, the moderators maintaining these pages are far more active in making posts than the personality they claim to represent. Social proof and social marketing go hand in hand and the higher number of updates ensures that the inauthentic page always ranks ahead of the genuine page and ends up getting more and more followers.”
With this latest Facebook development, verification badges will now appear not only next to the names of the pages but also in several other places. Users can test the authenticity of a post when they hover the mouse over a post that appears on their news feeds, when they use the search graph query and in stories about people liking a particular page.
