Google have made one of the biggest changes to Adwords Ad Extensions by allowing businesses to visually display content, using Image Extensions, within their Adwords Strategy.
Google Adwords Extension’s have been found to increase an adverts click through rate (CTR) up to 15%. One of the reasons due to this is an increased overall presence, “real estate”, when an advert has been triggered after an auction has taken place for a particular search query. The picture size or maximum picture size for Image Extensions has yet to be established, however, this could be the most significant advancement yet for advertisers aiming to utilise Extensions due to the content being visually compelling over and above a text extension. Image Extensions are at Beta Launch stage. Currently, advertisers must occupy the top Ad position to use Image extensions. This is extra incentive to have the top position within an Adwords Auction as the difference between the adverts showing will now be move visible.
At this stage there is ambiguity in regards to branded images and ownership of images and we will see over the coming months how Image extensions practically work. Image Extension now provide advertisers with Creative and Design Opportunities that were unavailable before within paid search marketing. Image Extensions are available only within Enhanced Campaigns at this stage.

Prior to Image Extensions, for a search that has a visual intent such as photography or luxury car design, a text ad may not at a glance give the searcher as much information as needed to make an informed decision to the relevance of an Ad. Image Extensions may pose a further problem for SEO’s as depending on the amount of Ads now being shown for a paid search this may push the organic search segment of a page down further. “
