Aspatar Hospital, an internationally known orthopedics and sports medicine specialty hospital located in Qatar, and the government of Qatar hosted the first ever US Leaders in Performance conference in Manhattan, New York on June 4 and 5th. Held at the Bloomberg News world headquarters in midtown Manhattan, the invitation-only event included over 300 audience members representing thought leaders in sports performance, health and safety. Among the speakers for this event were John Mara, owner of the New York Giants football club, Peter Grauer, CEO of Bloomberg, Shahid Khan, Owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Lieut. Gen. John Whisller, Deputy Commandant of the United States Marine Corps And the medical directors of Major League Baseball, Major League Soccer, National Football League, National Hockey League and the National Basketball Association. Representing the NBA was Dr. Jace Provo, Senior Vice President & Chief of Medical Affairs and Sports Medicine practitioner at Sports & Orthopedic Center.
The panel discussion focused on the topic of inter-league cooperation on developing policies and procedures for a state-of-the-art concussion program. Dr. Provo was one of the original thought leaders in the development of the NBA concussion protocol.
"When developing something as complicated and important as a concussion policy, nothing occurs in a vacuum. We had many discussions with key people in the other major sports leagues to determine the best way to protect the health and careers of our players." States Dr. Provo. Dr. Provo took a late night flight back from Manhattan on Tuesday to be ready to see Sports & Orthopedic Center patients on Wednesday. In addition to his busy schedule, he will also be covering the NBA Finals starting on Thursday when the Miami Heat take on the San Antonio Spurs in game one.
