Retail & Leisure International Magazine (RLI) announced the Yongsan International Business District Project as the recipient of its Future Project 2013, at its annual Global RLI Awards Ceremony in London, England.
“While the future of this project is uncertain, we applaud the audacity of the client in creating this world-class collection of high rise towers set atop a unified retail podium," said Mike Ellis, managing partner of 5+design. “As the architects responsible for the overall retail planning and the design of the central retail valley, luxury collection, and riverfront entertainment pavilion, we are proud to be associated with this visionary, award-winning project.”
The retail design planning of Yongsan International Business District Project met RLI’s rigorous standards in architectural excellence, innovation in materials, equipment, new techniques, and the positive impact the development will have upon its local community. Hailed as the world’s largest and most ambitious single project, with over twenty architects participating with signature designs, the 3 million square meter development covers 10 city blocks and is linked by a network of bridges, streets and landscaped plazas.
Creating the central public framework for a glittering skyline of high-rise buildings, 5+design’s role in the sweeping project was to design the central pedestrian spine, the Dragon Valley, and adjacent retail spaces in a way that connects the buildings with each other, the Yongsan train station, and the Han River. In addition to the central retail valley, which forms the primary pedestrian thoroughfare of the project, 5+design created street-level retail buildings of three to five stories grouped in individual clusters, or villages, helping to break down the scale of the massive development at the street level.
5+design delineated each village into distinct districts devoted to three main categories: Platinum Street Collection, University Department Store Zone, and Sports Active Life District. These retail zones surround a dramatic sunken public garden of lush landscape, water features, outdoor restaurants, an amphitheater, and public gathering areas, which link to an underground city of retail, restaurants, and commercial spaces.
The project also includes an entertainment pavilion whose design was inspired by its waterfront location and includes a collection of wave form terraces shifting in a fluid manner. The terraces fan out to create a series of stepped viewing platforms ideal for taking in the grandeur of the Han River and the southern Seoul skyline. Adding to the experience of the project, each terrace was designed to include an adjacent restaurant, bar or café to offer guests a relaxing repast.
Ranging from traditional to contemporary, 5+design seamlessly integrated architectural styles to imitate the way in which cities and neighborhoods grow organically over time. The Yongsan International Business District’s design is lyrical, picturesque, and now recognized as an award-winning project unlike any of its kind.
