This new ability to get to memory through brain stimulation will have various future applications which will hopefully offer some relief and joy to those with memory impairment.

A research project led by Dr. Joshua Jacob and his team at the Drexel School of Biomedical Engineering, Science and Health Systems, has looked into brain memory activity to better understand memory functions. eReflect recently reviewed the results of the study and noted that the research, which focused on two aspects of memory (brain monitoring and brain data collection), will help make important advances in memory-related program development.

According to the researchers, their initial findings were surprising. They discovered that when a person’s brain surface receives electrical current this makes them remember their past memories. As the research advanced, the scientists were able to specifically stimulate a region related to a patient’s particular past memory. When later the person was asked about it, they would remember most of the details. The researchers called this new finding a sort of neuron-based brain time travel, where brain stimulation makes the retrieval of old memories possible.

The patient this was attempted with had received brain stimulation at a brain region associated with highschool memories. When later the subject was questioned about their highschool years, the scientists confirmed that the part of the brain they earlier stimulated was seen to be the one activated to recall the patient's memories from highschool.

Ultimate Memory™ discussing these findings, stating how significant these are in subsequent initiatives in improving memory, especially for those with compromised memory due to age and other age-related illnesses. This new ability to get to memory through brain stimulation will have various future applications which will hopefully offer some relief and joy to those with memory impairment.

The potential of re-discovering memories that were thought inaccessible or entirely lost is a possibility that has made the research community eager to look further into what’s called regional brain stimulation and memory retrieval. Commenting on these findings by Dr. Jacob, a spokesperson for Ultimate Memory™ concluded that research like his is of utmost importance in finding new ways of understanding memory and ways to better use the brain to make it more memory-efficient. Scientists can only expect even more surprising findings in the near future as research methods get more refined and get deeper into our brains, as the developers at Ultimate Memory™ concluded.
