The Leagrave High Street Academy has been named as regional winner of the Secondary School of the Year for the East of England in the shortlist for the Pupil Premium Awards – run by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, the Department for Education and TES.
The awards offer cash prizes to schools across the country which are making the best use of Pupil Premium money.
The Pupil Premium policy sees schools receive money for each of their students who partake in the Free School Meals scheme and aims to improve results of children from deprived backgrounds.
At Barnfield West Academy, the Pupil Premium is used for a variety of purposes to enhance the learning experience of our students.
This can include funding breakfast and after school clubs, providing weekend revision classes, financial assistance with uniform, personal IT equipment and specialist vocational equipment.
Barnfield West Academy joined the Barnfield Federation in 2007 and since then has transformed the lives of many students AND families in the area. In 2007 only 17% of the students left the predecessor school achieving 5 or more GCSEs with English and Maths. In 2012 74% of Barnfield West students achieved 5 or more GCSEs A*-C including English and Maths, placing the Academy in the top of Luton league tables. In terms of value added the Academy was 1080.6 third in the country.
The Academy moved into a £30 million building in February 2011 which provides outstanding facilities and resources for students and the wider community.
Barnfield South Academy was also praised by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg for the improvements they have made in the achievement of disadvantaged students.
Nick Clegg MP will announce the overall winners of the Pupil Premium Awards in a special London ceremony on Monday 8 July.
Barnfield Director General Sir Peter Birkett said: “We are delighted that Barnfield West Academy has been recognised by the Deputy Prime Minister and the awards organisers. Our students are always our top priority and we believe every student deserves to be able to access the same exceptional facilities, resources and opportunities in life. Congratulations to all the other schools who have also been mentioned in the regional winners list. We look forward to the forthcoming July ceremony.”
