The Team Florida Wave made history by winning the Men’s Open Division of the USA Volleyball Open National Championships in a golden set win over Team Pineapple! The USA Volleyball Open National Championships were held at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville, KY from May 25-28. 2008 Olympic Games gold medalists Lloy Ball and Riley Salmon led Team Pineapple in the first five sets to a 26-24, 15-25, 25-27, 27-25, 15-11 victory to force the golden set. The Wave pushed on in an exciting golden set victory to end the tournament with a score of 25-22 and the Men’s Open title.
The Wave defeated the 2012 Open Champions, Lights Out (Great Lakes), 21-25, 25-21, 25-23, 25-20, to reach the semifinals and was the only men’s open team to enter the finals with an undefeated record of 7-0.
Team Florida Wave, one of five men’s PVL teams, used the tournament as a warm-up for the PVL Championships being held June 29 to July 2 in conjunction with the 2013 USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships in Reno, Nev. Team Florida Wave Captain and All-Tournament Team & MVP, Mike Iandolo, a setter from Lewis University, stated, “Playing with Wave has been one of the best experiences of my life. We made history together and are bonded by gold. I will remember this forever. I am honored to be a part of something like this and I am looking forward to repeating our success in Reno.”
“The Florida Wave finish is very impressive for the first men’s professional team to compete under the USA Premier Volleyball League (PVL) formation,” added PVL President and Team Florida Wave General Manager, Steve Bishop. “Their progress sets the bar pretty high for the talent level that we will see in the coming years of the PVL. Winning the US Open will allow this team to become a permanent part of volleyball history, and winning it as one of the first men’s PVL teams makes it even more important. I hope that our volleyball family will understand the significance of having an indoor professional volleyball league in the US and I hope even more that they will support the regions and teams that participate. Congratulations to the coaches and athletes of the men’s Florida Wave for a job well done!”
Team Florida Wave Head Coach, Steve Benson, shared, “To say I’m proud, honored and thrilled to have this experience is an understatement. The run we had was a magical one. Being a part of the only Florida team to win the gold medal in 85 years of the Men’s Open Championships is quite an accomplishment and an honor. This would have never happened without the Florida Region’s support and my coaching staff Rob Holley and Greg Villareal. We are looking forward to representing the region at the 1st Annual Men’s PVL Championships in Reno, NV later this month and are excited to bring the men’s pro game to the Boys’ Jr. National Championships!”
