BizLaunch, one of North America’s most trusted small business advisors, today announced the results of a new study, “Remote Working and SME’s: A Study into the Working Preferences of North American Small Businesses.” The survey examines the perspectives of small business owners on the subject of remote working.
Key findings of the study revealed that:
-93 per cent of small businesses surveyed work remotely or employ others who work remotely on a regular basis
-56 per cent of small businesses surveyed believe working remotely increases productivity
-88 per cent of small businesses surveyed think working from home increases quality of life
-68 per cent of small businesses surveyed feel working from home helps them achieve work-life balance
The majority of small businesses work remotely at least once per week
There’s been a great deal of discussion over the past few months regarding the remote working debate, after it was revealed that Yahoo CEO, Marissa Mayer, put an end to the practice within the multinational corporation. But while this may have been the right choice for internet giant Yahoo, is it the right course of action for small businesses? BizLaunch wanted to find out. We surveyed over 250 small businesses and discovered that a majority— an overwhelming 93 per cent—work remotely or employ others who work remotely on a regular basis, with only 7 per cent claiming to run their business solely from a physical brick-and-mortar location other than their home.
Working remotely comes with a myriad of benefits, say SME’s
Costs, work-life balance and reduced stress levels are the main benefits of working remotely, according to the small business owners surveyed. 56 per cent of SME’s believe that working remotely increases productivity, and a staggering 88 per cent believe it improves quality of life. When asked what the best thing about working remotely is, 71 per cent of small businesses surveyed said the savings they could make were the biggest advantage.
Room for improvement
Of the small businesses surveyed, most felt that the lack of team spirit was the biggest disadvantage of working remotely, followed by trust and accountability. When asked what they think would improve remote business models, most (47 per cent) suggested daily or weekly progress reports with partners or employees, followed by a weekly face-to-face meeting and a weekly team conference call (37 per cent and 36 per cent, respectively).
