COLUMBUS, OHIO (PRWEB) June 13, 2013

The fifth annual Spike Out Sepsis, an award-winning sand volleyball tournament, is coming June 22, 2013 at the Bogey Inn Bar & Grill, 6013 Glick Road in Powell. Teams from around central Ohio will be playing to highlight the dangers of sepsis, which kills more people in the United States each year than breast, lung, and prostate cancers combined.

Spike Out Sepsis is a unique 6-on-6 sand volleyball tournament designed to raise funds for sepsis awareness. Sometimes called blood poisoning, sepsis is the body's often-deadly response to infection. The beneficiary of Spike Out Sepsis is Sepsis Alliance, a national 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to raising awareness of sepsis by educating patients, families and healthcare professionals to treat sepsis as a medical emergency.

“Spike Out Sepsis is a true grassroots effort to raise awareness for a disease that will affect one out of every 187 Americans in the next year,” said Dr. Jim O’Brien, event director. “What’s even more startling is that fewer than half of the public has even heard of ‘sepsis’. Spike Out Sepsis aims to change through its fun, team-building competition.”

The volleyball tournament will begin at 10 a.m.with round-robin play at The Bogey where food, drinks, and entertainment will be provided all day. SOS is a fun event designed to raise money for an important cause. Any athletic accomplishments are purelyaccidental. Competitive volleyball players looking for an athletic challenge with licensed professional officials will find Spike Out Sepsis to be a little lacking. However, area residents who love being outside, are looking for a great time and are willing to laugh at themselves will find Spike Out Sepsis to be a truly amazing event.

Top teams in each pool advance to a single-elimination championship round. Play is best two-of-three games, rally scoring (point scored on every serve) to 21, win by at least 2 points.

Prior to each match, a team item will be auctioned. The winner of each auction will select one of the two teams in that match to wear challenge items such as isolation gowns or bike helmets, etc. Challenges will only occur during pool play.Teams may purchase challenge items with money raised through their team fundraising account or by purchase the day of the tournament.

This year’s event will also feature a silent auction, food, drinks and entertainment for family members of all ages.
