On July 7, 2013, 1% for the Planet, the world's largest environmental network, will pair with Waitsfield, Vermont's Mad Marathon for the first marathon completely dedicated to sustainability. Through this new partnership, both 1% for the Planet business members and nonprofit partners are coming together to raise awareness and funds for the planet, showing the 1% for the Planet movement in action.

1% for the Planet aims to create an alliance of businesses dedicated to environmental sustainability. Member businesses pledge to donate 1% of sales directly to nonprofits within the network that are working towards a healthier planet. Over 10 business members have pledged their support for the upcoming Marathon Weekend, making the Mad Marathon another example of the powerful partnerships formed between 1% for the Planet nonprofits and businesses.

“The Mad Marathon is more than just a marathon, it also celebrates the 1% for the Planet network and its first 10 years,” says Terry Kellogg, CEO of 1% for the Planet. “The Mad Marathon is turning in to a true 1% for the Planet event - you can actually see the movement in action through these partnerships and see the positive impact these organizations make.”

1% for the Planet business members from all around the country are coming together to support the New England-based event with funds or product donation. Participating sponsors include dirtygirl gaiters, WAI SUP, Klean Kanteen, Westcoast Expeditions, Racer Frames, People Towels, Plak That, TruSweets, LLC/Surf Sweets, EcoTOOLS, Skinny Pancake, Steel Cow Gallery, Elemental Herbs, Refleece, and Tonewood.

Funds raised by 1% for the Planet will be split among three New England nonprofit partnerships: The Staying Connected Initiative, The Bay Circuit Trail and The Penobscot River Restoration Trust. All three of these organizations believe it is possible to accomplish more together than alone and each collaborate with as many as 30 organizations working towards goals such as landscape connectivity (Staying Connected), recreational trails (Bay Circuit), and river restoration (Penobscot). 1% for the Planet New England nonprofit partners also have the opportunity to create individual running teams and raise funds for their organization.

Kellogg added, “It's been great to see the network grow over these first ten years and it is events like the Mad Marathon that remind us of the great work being done across the board - partnerships between businesses and nonprofits have formed, over $100 million in funds has been donated, and true impacts have been made. Here's to the next ten.”
