Ingate Systems CEO Karl Erik Stahl to Present on “ICE, Turn, Stun and Security” at WebRTC Conference & Expo June 2013

Ingate® Systems, a developer of security-based SIP and WebRTC solutions that enable quality and interoperability across borders for global multimedia real-time communication, will be presenting at the upcoming WebRTC Conference & Expo to be held June 25-27, 2013 at Cobb Galleria in Atlanta, GA.

Ingate CEO Karl Erik Stahl will discuss the challenges that WebRTC applications have in dealing with Network Address Translation (NAT) and firewall traversal when using ICE, as well as presenting a novel view of ICE regarding it as a request for real-time communication through the firewall.

Stahl’s session, entitled, “ICE, Turn, Stun and Security,” will address WebRTC traversing NAT and firewalls, especially in the enterprise and carrier space. This is done using ICE that primarily was developed for, but sparsely used with SIP, where SBCs are dominant. Stahl will show how combining the Turn/Stun server with the firewall can both bring quality of service to real-time communication over data-crowded networks and cope with restrictive enterprise firewalls where ICE fails.

Ingate’s way of incorporating the Turn and Stun server into the firewall, named Q-TURN, allows both prioritization and traffic shaping of the real-time traffic, quality measures that are important when stepping up from 3.5 kHz telephony voice to potentially telepresence HiFi and HD quality using WebRTC. The real-time traffic can also be prioritized over the data traffic on the transport network, using diffserve or RSVP.

Ingate’s Q-TURN technology may allow carriers to offer superior quality for valuable real-time traffic and charge it separately from best-effort data traffic. That can also be a way out of the dilemma of a carrier’s income stream collapsing when voice is moved to the Internet and just being best-effort data at no cost.
