LEDs are renowned for using lower energy and driving down energy costs, but it is wonderful they also have the ability to help save wildlife too

According to an article published on Laser Focus World on the 6th of June 2013, research has suggested that amber-coloured LED lights placed at coastal locations do not distract or draw turtle hatchings and other similar wildlife towards populated, dangerous and white illuminated areas, resulting in the animals entering the sea safely and reducing sea turtle deaths.

Previous studies have concluded that turtles are naturally drawn to white lit areas and as a result move towards rocks nearby to lay their nest. This is usually tampered or damaged by human activity and the turtle hatchings are killed as a result. In instances where amber coloured LEDs are used, fewer turtles were attracted and stayed away from populated, busy areas and therefore produced their young safely. Such problems are mostly found in warm, coastal areas such as California. As Jeremy Cage, CEO of Lighting Science explained:

“Sea turtles and other wildlife are endangered by traditional white lighting at homes and businesses in coastal regions.”

Properties around coastal regions are also asked to use low energy emitting bulbs in order to protect against unnecessary wildlife deaths. The use of LED lights in such a way proves an interesting read for Simple Lighting, a specialist LED company based in the UK which supplies a range of LED lights including LED plinth lights, coloured LEDs and LED strips. A member of the expert team added:

“It is fascinating that coastal properties and surroundings areas are required to be extra careful about the type of bulb they use. LEDs are renowned for using lower energy and driving down energy costs, but it is wonderful they also have the ability to help save wildlife too.”
