Bill Couzens, founder of LessCancer.org (Next Generation Choices Foundation), has announced that Margaret I. Cuomo, M.D. is a new board member.
“We are thrilled and honored to have Dr. Cuomo on our board,” says Couzens. “Dr. Cuomo’s reputation as an advocate for the prevention of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes has earned her attention as a widely respected physician and advocate.” Couzens observes, “Dr. Cuomo has long understood and often said, ‘Leadership at the federal, state, and local levels of government, and a commitment from American people from every walk of life and every part of our nation, can begin to create a world without cancer.’” Couzens adds, “Dr. Cuomo’s work is at the core of what we work strive for: Less Cancer.”
Margaret I. Cuomo, MD, is a board certified radiologist, teaching professional, and national advocate for the prevention of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Her recent book, A World Without Cancer: The Making of a New World and the Real Promise of Prevention, presents a provocative and surprising look into the ways that profits, personalities, and politics obstruct real progress in the war on cancer. This groundbreaking book, based on her own firsthand experience with cancer patients, has been described as “urgent and powerful,” “an eye-opening look at the way we fight cancer,” and a “call for bold leadership to transform our system from treatment to prevention.” The book also features Less Cancer board member and cancer prevention pioneer Ronald B. Herberman, MD, who recently passed away.
“Less Cancer is dedicated to the prevention of cancer by raising awareness, educating, and developing strategies to reduce cancer risk,” says Dr. Cuomo. “I am honored to participate in Less Cancer’s vital mission to achieve a cancer-free society.”
Dr. Cuomo graduated summa cum laude from St. John’s University and received her medical degree from Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. She served as an attending physician specializing in diagnostic radiology at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset and dedicated much of her time and energy to the diagnosis of cancer and AIDS using state-of-the art CT scans, ultrasound examinations, and MRIs. Dr. Cuomo has also provided academic instruction to medical students at New York University Hospital and Cornell University Medical College, and has published numerous articles in medical journals.
Dr. Cuomo has been featured on such TV shows as Good Morning America, Good Day New York, Morning Joe, and Inside Edition, as well as national and regional radio programs. Her work has been featured in many magazines and newspapers, including Better Homes and Gardens, Education Update, Family Circle, Glamour, InStyle, Manhattan, Metro Newspapers, Networking, New York Daily News, O Magazine, Parade, People, Prevention, Redbook, Vogue, and Woman’s Day, and websites, including DoctorOz.com, Glamour.com, DailyBeast.com, Prevention.com, BlackstoneAudio.com, ASCOPost.com, and EverydayHealth.com. Dr. Cuomo is a contributor and a member of the Medical Review Board of the Huffington Post, and is also a regular contributor to WebMD.
The Cuomo family’s commitment to public service is evident. Dr. Cuomo’s father is former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, and her brother is current New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. In addition, her mother, Matilda Raffa Cuomo, is the founder of the New York State Mentoring Program, and her brother Chris Cuomo is a CNN anchor.
