Newport News, Va. (PRWEB) June 14, 2013
Fire fighters from Newport News, Va. are teaming up with the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) to raise funds for the annual “Fill the Boot” campaign. An inaugural Fire Fighter Festival will be held at the City Center in the Oyster Point neighborhood of Newport News June 22 from 3 to 10 p.m.
The event will include local bands, beer sales, entertainment for kids - including a dunk tank and fun house - fire engine displays, and the traditional fire fighter boot to literally fill with donations.
The Fire Fighter Festival is sponsored by the Newport News Fire Fighters Association (Local 794).
Proceeds collected from the Fire Fighter Festival will aid children and adults with neuromuscular diseases by providing funding for MDA’s summer camps for children, professional and public health education, and research. Since 1954, fire fighters have raised more than $250 million dollars for the MDA.
MDA is dedicated to finding treatments and cures for muscular dystrophy and ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease). Muscular dystrophy is a group of genetic diseases that causes damaged muscles to get progressively weaker. Some varieties of the disease can also affect the heart.
ALS causes the nerve cells that send a message from the brain and spinal cord to muscles to degenerate and die. The brain is no longer able to initiate and control muscle movement. People in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
