"Never-before shown pieces from K21's permanent collection."

The permanent collection at Düsseldorf’s K21 Museum contains many pieces by abstract painter Julius Bissier (1893-1965). The ongoing exhibit (through October 20, 2013) explores the artist’s phase beginning in the early 1950s marked by abstract geometric forms.

The artist turned to abstract painting in the 1930s and since then used a variety of media and sources of inspirations, including ink – inspired by Far East art and philosophy – followed by wood prints and large-scale works on canvas.    In 1955 he began to work with smaller scales and created a series of “miniatures.” He continued using ink, seeking sacred art and spirituality in geometry and merging intuition and precision – a quest he continued to his death in 1965.
