Novato, CA (PRWEB) June 18, 2013
LumiGrow, Inc. (http://www.lumigrow.com), the market and technology leader in smart horticultural lighting, announced today that Dutch Heritage Greenhouse (http://www.dutchheritagegreenhouse.ca), a leading provider of chrysanthemums, lisianthus and other cut flowers, selected 60 LumiGrow SmartPAR™ software-enabled Pro 325™ LED greenhouse lights for its Chilliwack, British Columbia facility. By replacing high intensity discharge (HID) lamps with LumiGrow LED lights, Dutch Heritage Greenhouse will achieve higher stock plant yields and halve lighting-related electrical costs.
LumiGrow LED lights will support Dutch Heritage Greenhouse’s chrysanthemum crop throughout the vegetative growth and flowering stages. Spectral output will be adjusted as appropriate for photoperiod control including day length extension and night interruption.
Following a review of market offerings, Dutch Heritage Greenhouse management selected LumiGrow LED fixtures because they are the only lighting products available with these combined characteristics:
- Demonstrated ability to improve crop yields
- Lowest operating costs due to energy-efficient operation
- Compact hardware footprint to allow more sunlight to reach the plant canopy
- Maximum red and blue PAR light output
Dutch Heritage Greenhouse faces winter season electricity costs that are ten times higher than their summer costs. These exponentially higher costs are entirely due to the high cost of operating HID fixtures to supplement lower light levels in winter. LumiGrow LED lights reduce electrical consumption by 60 percent versus the 750-Watt HID lights they are replacing at Dutch Heritage Greenhouse.
Dutch Heritage Greenhouse will achieve additional savings because LumiGrow LED lights reduce maintenance costs. An estimated two percent of Dutch Heritage Greenhouse’s 2,500 HID lights fail annually due to faulty starters. HID lights also require routine ballast replacement. By contrast, LumiGrow LED lights are warranted to provide zero-maintenance operation.
“The LumiGrow lights are a no-compromise solution for us,” stated Art Breugem, co-owner of the father-and-son operated Dutch Heritage Greenhouse. Mr. Breugem continued, “We’ll improve our yields while we get our winter operating costs under control.”
LumiGrow CEO Kevin Wells said, “The Dutch Heritage Greenhouse team rigorously researches, evaluates and implements techniques to improve crop performance and increase greenhouse efficiencies.” Mr. Wells added, “We’re pleased that LumiGrow LED lights are part of their well-managed and highly efficient operation.”
In addition to implementing LumiGrow LED lighting, the Dutch Heritage Greenhouse team employs a variety of other techniques and technologies to improve greenhouse production and plant breeding performance. For example, the facility is heated with biofuel. Natural gas is used sparingly to spur plant growth.
About Dutch Heritage Greenhouse
As the name suggests, Dutch Heritage Greenhouse traces its roots back to a greenhouse in the Netherlands founded in 1961. In the five decades since then, the Breugem family behind Dutch Heritage Greenhouse has been continually refining chrysanthemum growing techniques. Today, the state-of-the-art facility in Canada spans 20,000 square meters devoted to production and an additional 2,000 square meters for stock plants. Expansion plans are underway. In addition to a year-round and ever-changing variety of chrysanthemums, Dutch Heritage Greenhouse is also highly regarded for the high quality of its seasonal cuttings and flowers available for any occasion.
