‘Joe and I have been friends for many years. I thought the film was a winner. Bringing Joe (Pesci) in was the natural thing to do.

Superstar performer Joe Pesci of Casino, Goodfellas and My Cousin Vinney returns to the screen in the new star studded Documentary BEHIND THE GATE. The film, which stars the Academy Award Winner, Joe Pesci and was directed by Mark Giardino and independent filmmaker Jack Lucarelli is slated for release in August 2013.

BEHIND THE GATE is the definitive documentary on the sport of horse racing and has been reviewed by In Hollywood Magazine which called the film: “The best film on the sport of horse racing that has ever been made…” The film also stars celebrity chef Bobby Flay, six-time World Boxing Champion Oscar De La Hoya, two time Superbowl Champion Dwight Hicks and other notables including horse racing legends Bob Baffert, Gary Stevens, Ron McAnally and many others.

Director Jack Lucarelli said, ‘There has never been a film like Behind The Gate. We cover every aspect of the sport from gambling to breeding, the owners and every thing in between.” The film was shot at Santa Anita Race Track, Betfair Hollywood Park and at farms and ranches in and around Los Angeles and San Diego.

Co-director Mark Giardino said, ‘Joe and I have been friends for many years. I thought the film was a winner. Bringing Joe (Pesci) in was the natural thing to do. Joe loves horses, he has been a breeder and an owner for many years. Who better to narrate and star in a film of this quality?”

The film chronicles the Triple Crown bid of the infamous I’ll Have Another and the beginning of the career of the fantastic 3 year old, Home Journey. It quickly went from just a comparison of two horses, one at the start of its career and one at the end, to something quite a bit different.

Shot during the 2012 and 2013 Racing Season, the film also stars controversial trainer Doug O’Neill, jockey Aaron Gryder, Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens and many other horse racing superstars.

Executive Producer and daughter of the famed actor Slim Pickens; Daryle Ann Lindley-Giardino said, “I love the sport and I love the horses, I simply wanted to tell a story that really let people know what goes on in every aspect of racing.”
