Learning Sciences Marzano Center for Teacher and Leader Evaluation is pleased to announce the publication of a new white paper: Common Language, Common Goals: How an Aligned Evaluation & Growth System for District Leaders, School Leaders, Teachers, and Support Personnel Drives Student Achievement. The paper outlines the next leap forward in the theory and practice of educator evaluation – highly aligned, district-wide systems that share a common language of instruction and a shared focus on driving student achievement through improved classroom practice.

The paper comes on the heels of the release of two new evaluation models this year, designed for district leader evaluation and non-classroom instructors. Developed by Learning Sciences Marzano Center to align with the Marzano Teacher and School Leader models, the new District and Non-Classroom models complete the first such fully aligned evaluation system available. With “hierarchical” evaluation systems, all stakeholders share a vision of best instructional practice and an unwavering focus on teacher development and student learning. The aligned models create a dynamic system of influence that moves both horizontally and vertically across the school system, recognizing the interdependence of all educators: The practice of district leaders influences both principals and teachers, and vice versa; while classroom and non-classroom instructors also collaborate and strengthen each others’ practice.

A hierarchical evaluation system also develops and supports the instructional expertise of school and district leaders. Building instructional expertise for educational leaders is an increasingly important component of evaluation in an era of high accountability, where leaders must provide strong mentorship for struggling teachers and support personnel. Such emphasis also ensures that the focus of the system remains squarely on best teaching practices to power student learning.
