"Flying Start to Literacy" from Okapi Educational Publishing is the winner of the 2013 Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) Distinguished Achievement Award in the highly competitive Supplemental Resources, Reading and Language Arts category.

The AEP Awards program, which has been in existence for over four decades, is the most prestigious and comprehensive recognition program in the learning resource community. Hundreds of entries are submitted each year, which include print materials, digital learning tools, and professional development curricula. Judges from the AEP Awards program praised "Flying Start to Literacy" as "exceptionally well done."

Continuing, they said, "This is a reading program that will be very interesting to students and very manageable to teachers. The very specific lesson plans, including strategies, phonics elements, etc. will make it easy to facilitate. The program seems easy to use and stays true to the stated objective. The lesson plans are nicely structured and the modular approach is convenient."

"We are proud to have our early literacy program win this prestigious award from the Association of Educational Publishers and to know that the judges recognize our commitment to providing high quality and engaging programs for students and easy-to-use and targeted instructional resources for teachers," said Pat Eastman, President, Okapi Educational Publishing.

"Flying Start to Literacy" is ideal for early reading and intervention programs as well as for use with English language learners. Research-based, the program pairs fiction and informational texts to help students develop deep comprehension of topics. The paired books explore the same key concept in a narrative and an informational text, enabling students to think about the topic from different perspectives, facilitating a much deeper understanding. In addition, the paired books help young readers develop a more thorough grasp of vocabulary as well as build strong writing skills. These features of "Flying Start to Literacy" match the approach to building literacy skills delineated in the Common Core State Standards.
