IOC increases network performance, lowers latency, and reduces CAPEX by 50 percent

“We are proud to present IOC today as a industry-first solution that successfully overcomes the complexities of managing the optical layer and offers its advantages and potential for our customers”, said Uwe Fischer, CTO, Coriant

Coriant, a leading global supplier of 100G optical transport technology, today announced the commercial availability of its Intelligent Optical Control (IOC). IOC is the industry’s first solution leveraging Software Defined Networking (SDN) technology for the optimization of the optical layer. Service providers benefit from significantly improved network performance, lower latency, and up to 50 percent savings in CAPEX. Operators can now implement new services up to 90 percent faster: Tests confirmed, for example, that the set-up time for a 100G data center service dropped from hours to minutes. IOC realizes the full potential of the transport network by enabling optimized resource utilization and comprehensive network automation, thereby facilitating shorter reaction time to end-user demands. In addition, IOC dramatically simplifies the development and integration of new network applications. Coriant showcases its portfolio including IOC at the WDM & Next Generation Optical Networks conference from June 17-20 in Monte Carlo, Monaco.

Coriant’s vision is to redefine optical networks with scalable end-to-end solutions, which enable customers to take advantage of the era of hypergrowth driven by mobility, video, data centers and cloud services. IOC is an important stepping-stone towards this vision and the industry’s first software platform, which integrates the SDN framework with intelligent control for multi-layer optical transport networks. It is specifically designed for network optimization as it reduces operational complexity and increases efficiency. To streamline hardware and software components across all layers of the optical network, IOC is a fully integrated solution based on Coriant`s leading software portfolio for the operation and planning of multi-layer networks: TNMS, TransNet, and TransConnect.

“We are proud to present IOC today as the industry-first solution that successfully overcomes the complexities of managing the optical layer and offers its advantages and potential for our customers,” said Uwe Fischer, CTO and SVP Product Management, Coriant. “Our long-term investment in R&D as well as our experience with complex and sophisticated meshed optical networks has paid off: Accessing the optical layer via IOC adds significant performance and increases the utilization of the existing infrastructure. IOC is interoperable with third party network elements and controllers due to its modular architecture and standardized external interfaces, thereby being able to control multi-domain networks while protecting operator’s investment.”

“Coriant’s optical networking portfolio includes the industry’s highest performing, future-proof 100G transport solution with advanced service design and planning automation software,” stated Herbert Merz, President and CEO of Coriant. “Presenting IOC at WDM & Next Generation Optical Networks 2013 proves that we invest successfully in research and development to deliver innovative products for our customers. Our plan is to not only lead in optical performance, but also to raise the bar for the entire industry.”

Demonstrations of IOC illustrate how Coriant’s architecture and its SDN-oriented solution elements transform the economics and utility of networks and network operations. Coriant is at booths #5 and #6 at the WDM & Next Generation Optical Networks conference, June 17-20.
