Existing LinkedIn Contacts Can Be Used to Boost Career Prospects, Find the Edge Expert Says

Businesspeople can use their existing LinkedIn contacts to connect with influential individuals they'd like to do business with, Mark Williams has said in a Find the Edge article published today.

Most LinkedIn users are failing to fully exploit the potential their existing contacts offer them to reach out to new, influential individuals who they could do business with, Mark Williams has said in a Find the Edge article.

He uses a post published today on the business website to discuss why making new connections through existing contacts can be so beneficial, and to explain how it can be achieved.

Williams said: 'Everyone’s got an opinion about who you should and shouldn’t connect with on LinkedIn, but one thing is universally agreed – you should always connect with people that you know well.

'The interesting thing is that whilst people usually do connect with those they know well (at least most of them), they often fail to leverage those contacts effectively.

'To be honest, connecting with people that you already know has little value unless you use the power of LinkedIn’s visibility to discover who they know.'

Williams says there are two easy ways to form new connections with individuals that an existing contact is already connected with. One options is to use what's called a 'LinkedIn Introduction'.

This functionality allows users to send a message to someone they don't know via a shared contact. He says the other way is to simply ask the shared contact for an introduction to the targeted individuals.

He said: 'Just click on a connection’s number of connections to reveal who they are connected to.

'Once you have found someone of interest, just pick up the phone and ask your connection if they would be happy to introduce you. Asking the question “Can you introduce me to X?” is a much better question than “Who else do you know?”

'This is where the power of LinkedIn really comes to the fore.'
