The Heirloom Market & Café presents the latest episode of The Old Time Heirloom Hour. In honor of Father’s Day, this episode features special recognition of fathers with several segments paying homage to special moments and important lessons learned from dads.
This week’s episode sees host Bob Whitten welcoming guest host Ron Abbott and special guest Michele Beschen. Abbott brings humor and unassuming charm to the stage as he engages in friendly banter with Whitten and directs conversations with guests. Beschen, host of B. Original on DIY Network, has also appeared on PBS, Rachel Ray, and other national stages. She brings her creative experience with do-it-yourself and her passion for organics and recycling to several simple projects she presents in this episode of The Old Time Heirloom Hour. She comments, “Nature’s art store is always open. The selection is ever-changing and the price is always right.”
One of her creative ideas involves recycling old tire rims by turning them into planters. She suggests putting it on the ground before filling it with dirt to allow plant roots to delve deeply into the soil. This allows the plant to take advantage of the best of both the ground and a planter; it does not compete with other plants on the surface but it also has lots of room to spread roots without becoming pot bound. Beschen also suggests turning old angel food cake pans into small planters to go around umbrellas in outdoor table sets.
During another segment, Abbott and Beschen invite her father Ron to the stage where they discuss their close relationship and the many ways he influenced her life. Beschen attributes her self-confidence, perseverance, and respect for nature to him. As he states, “Mother Nature does not reward stupidity.”
This episode also welcomes musical guest Larry Michael Bettcher, nicknamed “The Mississippi Man.” He has played on several riverboats, including the Mississippi Belle, and has released several albums. In this episode of The Old Time Heirloom Hour he performs three songs including “Lord, I’m Comin’ Home” in which he encourages the audience to sing along on the chorus. His final song is a touching tribute to his father. In the introduction to the song, he recalls his father’s advice: “If you’re not having a good time, lower your standards.”
With lively discussion, excellent music, and a humorous black and white skit, this episode of The Old Time Heirloom Hour should not be missed!
