Atlantic Health System Makes Top Three of AARP’s “Best Employers” List

Atlantic Health System has been ranked as one of the top three of AARP’s “Best Employers for Workers Over 50,” which was announced today. It is the only NJ hospital system named to the list, and this marks the sixth time that Atlantic Health System has made the list.

Atlantic Health System, one of the largest non-profit health care systems in New Jersey, is one of the top three companies in the nation identified by AARP as one the “Best Employers for Workers Over 50.”

Atlantic Health System is the only hospital system in New Jersey on this year’s “Best Employers” list.

The parent organization of Morristown Medical Center, Overlook Medical Center, Newton Medical Center, and Goryeb Children’s Hospital was ranked third in the list of 50 employers that have demonstrated exemplary practices with regard to recruitment, retention and promotion of older workers, and have created and fostered a workplace that is supportive of the contributions that older workers offer to the business community.

This marks the sixth consecutive time that AARP has chosen to honor Atlantic Health System as a Best Employer for older workers. In 2009, when AARP ranked hospitals and health care organizations in a separate “Best Employer” list, Atlantic Health System was chosen as the top company. In 2011, Atlantic Health System was ranked 7th when AARP returned hospitals and health care organizations to the overall list of 50 companies.

While many companies seek to hire younger, less experienced workers, Atlantic Health System has hired younger and older alike. The organization has targeted the mature workforce with recruiting efforts such as posting jobs on various media outlets and websites geared toward over-50 workers, and outreach at clubs, organizations and events for older workers. As a result of these and other efforts, Atlantic Health System continues to hire more workers over 50 each year.

Thirty-eight percent of Atlantic Health System employees are over the age of 50, and the average tenure of employees over 50 is nearly 16 years.

An example of Atlantic Health System’s appreciation of experienced employees is its mentorship program, which gives older employees the opportunity to share their knowledge and experience with younger employees. It also offers an in-house faculty academy, in which many of the system’s older employees, well known experts in their respective fields, are asked to present their work in the global learning community. Of the academy instructors, 70 percent are over 50. The organization also celebrates long-service anniversaries with announcements, parties and awards.

In addition to offering on-site child care centers and child care for children and grandchildren of employees, Atlantic Health also offers emergency backup childcare and eldercare in which employees will receive reimbursement for at-home caregivers. Atlantic Health System also has an elaborate wellness program that encourages employees to maintain a personal profile through questionnaires that focus in part on cardiac, cancer, nutrition, and exercise and stress issues.

In 2012, of the more than 3,000 employees who participated in the Mayo Clinic Health Assessment, an employee health assessment program offered to all Atlantic Health System employees, more than a third were over the age of 50, a significant increase from 2011. The assessment showed that employees made improvement in four out of the five risk areas targeted by the program.

Among the other programs offered by Atlantic Health System highlighted by AARP:

  •     Opportunities for Retirees: The hospital system stays connected with its more than 2,500 retirees by inviting retirees to organization events, providing retirees with ongoing access to retirement planning workshops and information, and by formally acknowledging employees upon their retirement. Retirees receive lifetime discounted meals at the hospital cafeterias. The following work arrangements are offered to retirees: temporary work assignments, consulting or contract work, telecommuting, and part-time work
  •     As in previous rankings, AARP again highlighted Atlantic Health System's 1000 Hour Club, a program specifically for employees age 50 and over, which allows retirees the opportunity to return to part-time and per-diem work in as early as three months after they have begun receiving retirement benefits. Those in the club can work up to 999 hours each year while continuing to collect their retirement benefits
  •     The hospital system offers a pension plan which is entirely funded by Atlantic Health System, as well as a voluntary 403B plan with enhancements to help employees save tax-deferred dollars for retirement. The organization also offers on-site, full-time, certified financial counselors and free financial planning workshops for employees and families
