So many of our students have told us how this particular course has had such a positive impact on them, and not just in the context of their college education but throughout their lives.

This July, Altius Education, in partnership with Tiffin University, will offer a new for-credit MOOC, SCS 110: Foundations of Success, through Ivy Bridge College of Tiffin University. The course, which has long been a favorite among Ivy Bridge’s diverse student body, helps students of all backgrounds develop strategies to be successful in college, work, and life. Now, thanks to the groundbreaking technology in Altius’ Helix online learning platform, this popular and empowering Ivy Bridge course will be available for $50 as a for-credit MOOC to anyone who’s interested.
Founded through a partnership between Altius Education and Tiffin University, Ivy Bridge College of Tiffin University has long been focused on creating an engaging online learning experience and innovative student support models in order to expand access to a quality college education.
“So many of our students have told us how this particular course has had such a positive impact on them, and not just in the context of their college education but throughout their lives,” explained Tiffin University President Dr. Paul Marion. “We want to make this course available to more people, who can benefit from its instruction. Since Altius has a learning platform that allows us to roll out innovative courses like this quickly and at scale, this course can be offered for a $50 administration fee.”
Altius Education’s online learning platform, Helix, implements research-based innovations from across the industry in order to improve students’ success in online programs. The SCS 110 MOOC is one of the earliest courses to be delivered on this new platform and includes advances in blended content and user interface design. Used to its full capacity, Helix allows institutions to deliver courses in a learning environment that is competency-based, adaptive, and personalized. One of the platform’s most distinguishing features is that it allows institutions to turn on and off features and functionality so that they can introduce innovations in course development and learning models when the university and the market is ready.
“Helix makes it possible for institutions to create innovative programs and plan for the future in a way that’s thoughtful and focused on student success,” said Paul Freedman, Altius Education CEO. “Many institutions feel the pressure to implement expensive technology solutions that may take a long time to develop and require a lot of investment. Helix’s flexibility allows an institution to deliver online courses and roll out new features such as adaptive content and personalized lessons in a systematic, structured way that makes sense for their students.”
Ivy Bridge College’s SCS 110 Foundations of Success course does just that. Unlike many other MOOCs, which offer little student support or guidance, Ivy Bridge College’s for-credit MOOC will be taught by a full-time faculty member, Steven Borawski, who will facilitate learning, grade student work and provide feedback on discussions and assignments. Upon successful completion of the course, students will receive a letter grade in this credit-bearing course and can request transcripts from Tiffin University. Students in the MOOC won’t have access to the free tutoring and robust college mentoring program that Ivy Bridge College’s degree-seeking students enjoy, but they will have the opportunity to seek assistance in a Quora-like answer forum from their fellow students and receive feedback from their instructor.
“There’s a lot of positive and negative buzz about MOOCs and online learning right now,” said Freedman. “MOOCs and online courses aren’t for everyone; they do however present a new opportunity to help more people access quality educational content. Our goal with this MOOC is to make sure they also receive a quality educational experience.”
“At Ivy Bridge College of Tiffin University, we think this particular course is a great resource that a lot of people can benefit from and we think it is particularly powerful for our population of students,” explained Marion. “With this new MOOC we’re excited to make this course available to a larger group of learners.”
The SCS 110 Foundations of Success MOOC starts July 1, 2013. Those interested in the course can register now or visit http://ivybridge.tiffin.edu/mooc to learn more about the course syllabus, online platform, and instructor.
