“Romania’s Got Talent”, the pioneer of second screen mobile applications in Central and Eastern Europa, in numbers:
- 2 weeks of development, for both iOS and Android platforms.
- 6 years spent in app sessions
- 850 GB of traffic
- 500.000 app sessions
- 5.4 million push notifications
- 100.000 downloads
The second screen mobile app “Romania’s Got Talent” was launched on 12 April 2013 and over 100.000 people downloaded it in less than 4 weeks. This means that over 20% of the smartphone and tablet users in Romania were able to view their favorite contestants, use a parallel voting system, enjoy live backstage camera shots and constant interviews, check-in to the show and share on social networks; as well as comment on their favorite contestant’s profile and on the app’s timeline. The application was created in less than two weeks, designed for smartphones and tablets, both for iOS and Android.
Second screen apps, also referred to as "companion apps," define an additional communication channel which allows a consumer to directly interact with the content they are consuming, such as TV shows, movies, music, or video games. Extra data is displayed on a portable device (smartphone or tablet) synchronized with the content being viewed on television.
“This second screen experience is a milestone for our company and our technology. Appscend is the first mobile application platform to successfully support the specific requirements of such apps. We will continue our pursuit of blending a live entertainment show with mobile engagement, building a stable and engaging communication channel between viewers and their favorite TV stars,” mentioned Sebastian Vaduva, CEO & Co-founder Appscend.
The show was a tremendous success, becoming the most popular show in Romania, with an average market share of 47.3%, reaching a third of Romania’s audience. Appscend’s second screen app not only faced all the challenges in providing an engaging and elegant companion app, but also brought mobile users closer to their favorite contestants and the show itself. From scaling the application and providing stability across both platforms, ProTV’s second screen app proved to be a success both in terms of viewer and mobile interactivity.
“Appscend’s cloud based technology was a key contributing factor to the mobile application’s success. We were particularly satisfied with the possibility of updating the app’s functionality and UX in real time as well as with the large number of useful data points about our users and their behavior, collected by the platform,” mentioned Adrian Tranca, C.I.O PROTV S.A.
