State of Plastic Surgery 2012 vs 2011

Minimally invasive procedures like injectables are increasingly more popular with patients as they provide natural but real incremental improvements.

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 19, 2013

In 2012, Americans visited their medical aestheticians more often than ever. According to the latest report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, released earlier this year, more than 14 million cosmetic procedures have been performed last year, spending more than $11 billion in the process.

The ASPS report divides all procedures into three categories: cosmetic surgical procedures, cosmetic minimally-invasive procedures and reconstructive procedures. The growth is primarily driven by the minimally – invasive procedures (up 6%), as surgical procedures have experienced a decline of 2%.

Breast augmentation is still the most popular cosmetic procedure with nearly 300,000 operations in 2012, but this procedure has experienced a significant decline of 7%.

As they become increasingly sophisticated, the minimally – invasive procedures are preferred to surgical methods and will dominate the market in the future. Last year marked the highest number of Botulinum Toxin Type A injections (commonly known by the brand names Botox and Dysport), with incredible 6.1 million injections.

"Minimally invasive procedures like injectables are increasingly more popular with patients as they provide natural but real incremental improvements which are important to patients. This has in turn increased non invasive treatments like Ultherapy (non surgical facelift) as well as facelift which has topped the charts for the first time in years," says Dr. Kevin Tehrani, a New York plastic surgeon, founder of Aristocrat Plastic Surgery & MedAesthetics

There have been 5.7 million procedures of this kind last year, a 5% increase from 2010.

As active members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the team of Aristocrat Plastic Surgery & MedAesthetics has produced a simple infographic, illustrating the most popular cosmetic procedures of the past year.
