One of the most important events in Siena, the Palio di Siena, takes place in beautiful Tuscany on July 2 and August 16 every year. The stunning city of Siena, known for its architecture and party scene, is arguably most renowned for the Palio di Siena horse race. The race is a bareback dash around the huge Piazza del Campo which dates back to the 14th century and is said to have taken place every year since it began, apart from pausing for World War II. The Italians have ridden the stallions bareback since they lined up in 1656 and prior to that, participants rode buffalos.

The event is festive and joyous for those watching but for the participants it is a serious event with honour the biggest prize for winning. The race comprises of 10 horses for each of Siena’s districts. There are seventeen in total. The winner not only brings victory to his contrade, but a special hand-painted silk banner of the Virgin Mary (created each year for the race) is theirs to hold with pride. The banner, also known as the ‘palio’, is thought to deliver great luck to the district that wins it.

The race itself is only brief but the celebration is what makes Sienna a great place to visit during the Palio di Siena. The city comes alive with music, singing, parades and feasts. The celebrations often start a week before the race begins and the winning district will throw a huge street party after the race which has been known to last for days.
