Just over 100 points separate current CBR World Standings leader Cole Echols from second-place Cooper Davis. The race for the championship buckle will come to a head next month at the CBR World Championships at Cheyenne Frontier Days. Considering Cooper Davis had not even hit high school the first time Cole Echols made the CBR World Finals, it is a battle of the veteran versus the young gun. Will Cole’s experience help him maintain his lead or will Cooper’s desire to seal his name in CBR history give him the competitive edge he needs to overtake the veteran?
Both men have had great seasons on the Road to Cheyenne Tour and beyond. Cole Echols, of course, made history with his win at the Roto-Mix Dodge City Shootout when he pocketed $43,500 – the largest single event sum ever paid out at a CBR event. He is also sitting well in the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) standings thanks to round wins at big indoor shows like San Antonio and he will likely qualify for the National Finals Rodeo this year. After seven years of professional bull riding, Cole is in position to claim a world championship title. This cowboy knows how important that position is and, given his experience, he will know what he needs to do to seal the deal.
Cooper had two event wins during the regular CBR season that set him just over 100 points behind Cole. With big wins at Lubbock and Forth Worth, Cooper proved he was capable of putting up big scores. At the Tuff Hedeman Championship Challenge he was over 90 twice. CBR President, Tuff Hedeman, pointed to Cooper as a likely 2013 standout before the Jackson, TN. event when he said, “Cooper Davis is a guy I think is going to have a big year.” Cooper’s certainly got momentum in his favor, given that he won the Texas High School Rodeo Association championship title last year, turned pro late in the season and immediately qualified for the 2012 CBR World Finals by winning his first Horizon Series event. It seems the next rung on the ladder is a world championship.
The question is, CBR fans, who do you expect to leave Cheyenne with the championship buckle? Are you rooting for the familiar face or the newcomer? Do you think experience will win out over youth?
