‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BYOD) is a concept on the rise with experts predicting more than one-third of organizations will stop providing devices to workers by 2016.* New research from Cint and FluidSurveys out today has now found more than half of Americans believe this trend is encouraging them to work outside of their contracted office hours.
In a survey of 934 people in the US, 59% felt having a personal smartphone or tablet for work purposes encourages them to do more ‘out of office’ work. This was supported by nearly three-quarters (71%) of those polled admitting to working outside of office hours. The primary function for this was to ‘reply to emails’ and ‘answer phone calls’. Over a third (40%) worked over six hours or more a week in addition to their contracted hours. This figure was significantly higher in the US than in the UK, where just over half (59%) claimed to spend part of their free time working, and 26% of these over six hours a week.
However, when it came to remuneration for the use of their personal devices, over two-thirds (68%) stated that they covered the entire cost of using their smartphone personally. Only 18% stated that their company contributed in full to the cost of their smartphone charges, with a further 12% subsidising in part. However, over two-thirds (67%) of these individuals felt it appropriate that their company should contribute to some or all of the cost.
The consumer research, carried out by leading provider of technology for obtaining market insight, Cint, and online survey software company Fluid Surveys, questioned nearly 2,000 adults working in the US and the UK to find out their opinions on the rise of BYOD and how it affects their work and home life.
