Over Two Years, VC Provides More Than 800 Hours of Operational Consulting, Executes 9 Strategic Projects, and Helps Source and Hire 18 Employees on Mashery’s Behalf

OpenView has exceeded my expectations in every way.

OpenView Venture Partners, an expansion-stage venture capital firm focused on providing technology companies with deep operational support, released today details around its investment in, and two-year engagement with, API management provider Mashery. Documented in a case study, OpenView has provided a behind-the-scenes look at its investment into the San Francisco based company that ultimately helped bring about its acquisition by Intel in April 2013 for an undisclosed amount.

Following OpenView’s initial $8 million Series D investment in May 2011, the firm quickly partnered with Mashery, utilizing its in-house consulting team of sales, marketing, research, and recruiting experts to identify and address some of the biggest opportunities and obstacles the company faced. Over the course of two years, OpenView completed nine strategic projects on Mashery’s behalf, ranging from conducting a targeted keyword research project to help with the company’s search engine marketing efforts to completing market segmentation and buyer insights research initiatives.

Another major project that OpenView undertook for Mashery was building a remote outbound lead generation team in Boston, by hiring, training, and coaching four outbound lead generation reps over the course of nine weeks. By the end of 2011, the team had created 300 new opportunities, contributing to 60 percent of the new business that Mashery booked in the fourth quarter that year.

The OpenView team also sourced and helped hire 18 different employees for Mashery, ranging from lead generation reps to a administrator, client solutions manager, and technical support engineer.

“OpenView has exceeded my expectations in every way,” said Mashery CEO Oren Michels. “The firm didn’t make false promises and it didn’t try to be everything to everyone. It knows who it is, understands what it’s great at, and delivers value that goes well beyond the check that it writes.”

That value translated into over 800 hours of consulting time and thousands of touch points with OpenView’s partners and operational experts. That all aligns with OpenView’s mission of helping some of the world’s best expansion-stage technology companies succeed.

“OpenView has a unique approach to venture capital that goes way beyond the capital that we provide,” explained OpenView found and Senior Managing Director, Scott Maxwell. “For us, it’s about bringing our operational and SaaS expertise to our portfolio companies to help them scale effectively. We are all very pleased to see how that strategy has paid off with Mashery.”
