As reported by Medical Daily(6/17), the number of students taking prescription drugs such as Adderall and Ritalin, is on the rise at New York colleges. New York Senator Chuck Schumer is asking for new regulations that require students to have a health evaluation by a school clinic or outside health facility if they will be requesting prescription drugs off campus. The students would be required to sign contracts and follow up with medical professionals to detail their medical and psychological history. Parents would need to verify that the student has an attention disorder.

Students have been abusing prescription drugs Adderall and Ritalin to help them cram for college exams. Normally prescribed for those suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), the drugs are powerful and can cause serious anxiety, depression and in some cases, psychosis. Abuse of these prescription drugs has also been directly linked to excessive alcohol consumption. According to Senator Schumer and a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report, about 90% of full-time college students who had abused Adderall in the past year also were binge drinkers and more than half were also heavy alcohol abusers.

Prescription drug abuse in the United States has been skyrocketing and many addicts have been checking into 24/7 medically supervised detox centers such as South Florida's Harbor Village. At Harbor Village, clients with prescription drug and alcohol issues can begin a proven step-by-step program to help them eliminate their addiction. Each client enjoys a luxury, state-of-the art environment where they are welcomed with upscale accommodations including a beautifully furnished suite with satellite television, 30,000 square feet of outdoor lounge area, spa, salon, massage and acupuncture services, nutritious, gourmet dining and the personalized support of a caring, attentive staff.

Concerned for the health of the thousands of New York college students, Senator Schumer said, “This is a matter of student health, safety and academic integrity and we need to look at all the options when it comes to keeping potentially addictive stimulants out of the hands of students who don't really need them.”

“Prescription drug abuse is a serious problem that can destroy your health and cause you to lose everything. Contact a detox center such as Harbor Village and receive the care you need,” said Robert Niznik, Harbor Village CEO.
