Over the past two years, global smartphone display shipments have increased 120%, thanks to growing sales of larger, higher resolution displays, according to the 2013 Smartphone and Tablet PC FPD Roadmap Report from NPD DisplaySearch. Apple’s iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 models, with 960/1136 × 640 resolutions and Samsung’s Galaxy S3 and S4 models, with HD (1270 × 720) and FHD (1920 × 1080) resolutions, are leading the overall growth of smartphone display shipments. While just a few years ago the 3.5” iPhone 4 was the leading display size, displays larger than 4.1” account for nearly half of all smartphone displays shipped this year.

”Screen sizes are growing, and resolution is increasing, driving growth in the smartphone display market,” said Hiroshi Hayase, Vice President of Small/Medium Displays at NPD DisplaySearch. “We can expect still more expansion of displays over 5” in the coming quarters, due to the increasing global penetration of the Galaxy S4.”

Reacting to increasing smartphone demand, small- and medium-sized display makers are developing and producing larger screens with higher resolutions. Some FPD makers have already started manufacturing 5” full high definition (FHD) displays, and other makers are rushing to follow suit, in order to answer the growing demand for higher resolution and larger screen sizes, which is expected in 2H’13.
