According to the medical laser specialists at The Laser Outlets, lasers may have more applications than previously thought. A recent study confirms as much; as Medscape reports, femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgeries in adults have been shown to be effective and safe for virtually all types of eyes—including such “challenging” eyes as those with mature cataracts and those with comorbidities, which might include Fuch’s dystrophy and pseudoexfoliation. The Laser Outlet has responded to the study, and its encouraging findings, with a new statement to the press, opining on the diverse benefits of laser surgery.
“Femtosecond lasers are becoming increasingly relied upon by physicians, partly because they are lightweight and portable and also because they have grown less expensive in recent years—especially if you buy a refurbished one,” notes The Laser Outlet, in its press statement. “More than that, though, these lasers have revealed themselves to have more applications than previously assumed, something that this new study makes evident.”
The new study has already generated widespread enthusiasm from within the medical community. According to Medscape, the results were presented “to a standing-room-only audience here at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery 2013 Symposium.”
The study, which involved femtosecond laser surgeries performed on hundreds of patients, included a thorough documentation of all comorbidities, and a grading of cataracts on the Lens Opacities Classification System (LOCS) II scale. The laser and phacoemulsification technologies used were all located in a single operating room, Medscape notes, and sterile procedures were observed. Researchers recorded all of the surgeries on video, and assess the effectiveness and precision of the procedures later.
The bottom line, according to researchers, is that the study has revealed incredible advantages of laser cataract surgery—including increased precision, reproducibility, and safety to patients, to say nothing of the chance to improve vision for patients with diverse ocular health issues and comorbidities.
Says Dr. Michael Lawless, a corneal surgeon from Australia who is quoted in the Medscape report, “Pseudoexfoliation and Fuchs' dystrophy are good examples where the benefits are obvious. Floppy iris syndrome is another; to have significant portions of the procedure completed prior to opening the eye is advantageous.”
The Laser Outlet is similarly optimistic about the study’s implications. “There is much reason to celebrate these results, but the big reason for excitement is that there is now a renewed sense of hope for those who suffer from many different afflictions of the eye—including rare, unique, and challenging-to-treat afflictions,” the company says. “The applications of medical lasers are becoming more abundant all the time, including the applications for cataract and other eye surgeries.”
