Sharing Pills Can Kill

Nearly twice as many adolescents are dying from poisonings than a decade ago, and many of these deaths are related to prescription drugs.

BURKE Communications launched the latest Public Service Announcement (PSA) television ad for Carolinas Poison Center on the dangers of teenagers sharing prescription pills.

The 30-secondPSA is part of the Sharing Pills Can Kill campaign launched by Carolinas Poison Center, part of the Carolinas HealthCare System, to help raise awareness of the growing problem of teenage prescription pill sharing.

“It has been a privilege to be a part of this campaign, from both a creative standpoint and as a parent. I am proud our team could help spread the word to our community about the dangers of teenage prescription pills sharing and make a difference in the lives of our community members,” said Jack Burke, President and Chief Creative Officer of BURKE.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that poisoning deaths from misuse of prescription pain pills among 15 to 19-year-olds have nearly doubled in the last decade. It’s one of the fastest growing causes of death among teens. Pain relievers, antidepressants, stimulants and other pills dispensed by a doctor for a family member or friend can be deadly if shared or misused in other ways.

“Nearly twice as many adolescents are dying from poisonings than a decade ago, and many of these deaths are related to prescription drugs. We are hoping to make teens and their families aware of the dangers of prescription pill sharing and take preventive measures to stop this trend,” said Rebecca Rembert, Assistant Director of Outreach and Development for Carolinas Poison Center.

The PSA will run throughout the Carolinas on Time Warner Cable – News 14 channels until the end of June. The ad may also be viewed online at roadrunner.com or on BURKE’s Vimeo site here.
