Starting July 1, Acuvue will be discontinuing the Acuvue® brand contacts from their product line. The Acuvue® brand contact lenses that "revolutionized" the industry in 1987, as touted by Vistakon, will be indefinitely replaced by their more customer specific lenses in Oasys, 1-day, and Advanced. Here is a short excerpt from the press release that VISTAKON® Division Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc., released:
"ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses, the product that revolutionized the industry in 1987, will no longer be available in select base curves and parameters in the U.S. as of July 1, 2013. All 9.1 base curves and 8.4 and 8.8 base curves of parameters from -6.50 to -11.0 are being discontinued. Products with 8.4 and 8.8 base curves and parameters ranging from -0.50 to -6.00 will continue to be available. All parameters of ACUVUE® Brand Contact Lenses BIFOCAL and ACUVUE® 2® COLOURS® Brand Contact Lenses will be discontinued as of December 31, 2013." - (Dated February 28, 2013) That press release can be viewed here.
Many contact wearers have reported that they are upset with the recent changes, and would much rather stay with the soon to be discontinued Acuvue brands.
"I don't understand the recent changes. If the contacts are selling, and are a proven formula, why change them? I don't want to switch to a different type." - A recent upset customer of CLEcontactlenses.com
Online contact lens companies are now urging customers to stock up on the brands that are soon to be discontinued. Up until July 1, they will be able to fulfill orders, but after that doors are closing.
"Some customers are even buying an entire year's supply of contact lenses. Seeing orders this large, is definitely unusual but we're not complaining." - Matt, a representative at Clecontactlenses.com
Clecontactlenses is even doing a small promotion to encourage people to stock up on the discontinued lenses. The coupon code is 222924074 and is good for 10$ off any order 75$ or more.
